Florida hurricane insurance for oncoming storms.jpg

For businesses in Florida, hurricane insurance is as important as it is for residents. Preparing for an impending hurricane will depend to some extent on the storm category; for instance for a Category 5 hurricane, which has winds of over 155 mph, some flooding and complete destruction of properties and roof failures in the region can be expected. With a Category 1 on the other hand, damage will be more minor, but can still be problematic for those in mobile homes.

When Category 4 or 5 hurricanes are expected you should consider the following items:

  • Where the safe areas of your building are located (generally center interior rooms and basement).
  • Outside items – these should be well-secured or anchored.
  • Trees should be pruned and trimmed of overhanging branches.
  • Power and gas – know the location of shutoffs.
  • State of the building roof cover - including its high-wind rating.
  • Valuables – consider where they can be safely stored.
  • Inventory – have a written record prepared if you don’t already have one.
  • Personnel – establish who is in charge of health and safety, and who can perform First Aid and CPR.
  • Has an emergency kit been prepared?
  • Items on lower levels – can these be elevated to protect them from flooding?
  • Windows and doors – can these be fortified?
  • Emergency numbers – ensure a list is handy.

Lastly, check that your Florida hurricane insurance coverage is adequate for rebuilding well before the season arrives and that you know who to contact if you need to make a claim.
