When you own a home in Florida, hurricane insurance really is essential to have some protection for your investment; to do without it is very risky indeed. There are also steps recommended by FEMA to help protect your windows and doors from high winds, and reduce the risk of damage to your property from hurricane.

Ideally your home should have impact-resistant doors and windows; however if it does not and you do not have the time or means to replace them, storm shutters offer some vital protection. Permanent storm shutters can be closed quickly when a hurricane or windstorm is approaching, and help prevent wind and debris from entering the building and doing possible untold damage.

FEMA estimates the cost of a storm shutter for a 3x4ft window to be around $600 to $720. A cheaper alternative is to make your own temporary wind covers from plywood, metal or fiberglass, and while a lot less expensive at around $10 for a 3x4ft plywood materials (not including time and tools), they require more work to install can only be used for a season.

In an area at risk of high winds, permanent shutters make sense. For the best protection they will need to meet local wind and impact standards. However while they provide a means of protection and damage minimization, they are not a guarantee, and it’s also very important to ensure you have adequate Florida hurricane insurance in case of home damage from hurricane.
