The wearing of seat belts while traveling in cars and other vehicles has been shown by research to save lives on the road, in fact around 15,000 each year on average in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Fewer accidents should mean fewer injuries, less road fatalities, and a reduced need for claims on Florida auto insurance policies.
The NHTSA also asserts that there are five things you should know about wearing seat belts, or “buckling up”. These are:
1. Wearing seat belts is the most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in case you are involved in a crash, as it keeps you secure inside the vehicle rather than being thrown out which is often fatal.
2. While air bags may help save lives they are designed to be used with seat belts, and can be dangerous on their own due to the force they exert.
3. It’s important to wear seat belts correctly – the lap belt should fit just below your stomach and the shoulder belt should cross the middle of your chest.
4. The seat belt should be a good fit for you and should be adjusted or refitted if not.
5. Every occupant in the car should be protected by an appropriate seat belt.
Reducing the number of accidents on the road also helps to keep down the cost of insurance. However since there are no guarantees it’s important to regularly review your Florida auto insurance to ensure you are fully covered in case of accident.
